Loyola's Office of Sustainability is conducting a Zero Waste planning process, supported by partners across the university. We hope to reconsider the waste that we generate across all our campuses to prevent valuable materials from ending up in landfills. As a part of the Loyola community, we want to hear from you!

Zero Waste Plan Priorities
The Steering Committee for the LUC Zero Waste Plan has approved the following Guiding Principles for the planning process:
  • Loyola University Chicago seeks to significantly reduce the volume of materials sent to landfills from our three primary campuses and other academic sites in alignment with the 2015 Climate Action Plan, Laudato si’ Action Platform, Plan150 University Strategic Plan, and commitment to social and environmental justice.
  • Acknowledging the limitations of recycling and composting, LUC will prioritize source reduction through policies, incentives, education, and opportunities for reuse.
  • When materials are purchased or generated by the institution or the Loyola community, LUC will have easily accessible and understandable opportunities for diversion from landfills through mixed recycling, special collections, and organics composting.
  • As part of LUC’s commitment to decarbonization and a reduction of reliance on fossil industries, the institution will eliminate single use plastics wherever feasible opting for reusable or less harmful materials.
